Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the difference between white silica sand and regular building sand?

White silica sand has a much higher SiO₂ purity and lower iron oxide content, producing a notably lighter, cleaner mortar colour compared to regular building sand. If mortar colour matters to the project, white silica sand is the correct specification.

2. What is FS1 sand used for?

FS1 is a grade classification for fine silica sand. It is used in mortars, such as specialty white cement, as well as in decorative renders and light-coloured pointing work. In everyday building use, FS1 sand is primarily mixed with white or ordinary Portland cement and water to create a workable, light-coloured mortar.

3. Why does the colour of my white silica sand vary between bags?

Silica sand's appearance can be affected by moisture content. Once the mortar dries and cures, the colour stabilises.
