Preparing your outdoor space for spring and summer
The spring and summer months are when your outdoor living area gets to shine. Garden parties, barbeques and sitting in the sunshine can all be enjoyed in the warmer seasons. Outdoor spaces of all shapes and sizes can play host to fun in the sun. Whether you have a large lawn to enjoy or a small balcony area to utilise, Beatson’s can help you make the most of your corner of the outdoors. From space-saving furniture to grand garden structures, we have everything you need to prepare your space for spring and summer.
Before beginning any big garden updates, you should give your garden a general tidy to see what you’re working with.
Despite our best efforts, sometimes our outdoor spaces can get neglected in autumn and winter, so take some time to clear up fallen leaves, eliminate weeds, and trim back unruly greenery.
If you have a lawn, give it a mow and apply a spring lawn feed, paying special attention to sparse areas. Give everything a good water, deadhead anything past its best to encourage new growth and prune shrubs and trees.
It's best to keep up with watering at least once or twice a week throughout the spring and summer. If it rains (not unlikely in the UK!), this might be less, whereas dry periods might need more frequent watering.
We have an excellent selection of garden care products, mowers, strimmers and trimmers, including options from leading brands like The Handy Garden Machinery and Webb Lawnmowers.
Once you have a clean slate to work with, you can start planning any updates or changes you want to make for spring and summer.
If you love hosting and have the pleasure of a large garden to do it in, why not step up your game further by creating different areas in your garden for guests to enjoy?
Splitting your garden into sections not only adds visual interest, it also has practical benefits. For example, if you have a dedicated growing area you want to protect from potential missteps, sectioning it off is a great way to preserve it while enhancing the look of your space.
Sections don’t have to be rigid and obvious, there are numerous ways to subtly segment your space that keeps your garden feeling cohesive. At Beatson’s, we have different options to choose from, including living screen planters and contemporary fencing to help you create different areas in your garden to impress guests through summer and beyond.
Nothing marks the beginning of summer like a barbeque! If outdoor cooking is your forte, you might consider making a dedicated BBQ area in your garden. The area can be as large or small as you want, so whether you have a trusty disposable BBQ or one with all the bells and whistles, you can enjoy it throughout summer and beyond.
Most flat, stable surfaces will be suitable for a BBQ area, but keep the following in mind to ensure the area is safe:
- Proximity to your house - Ideally, the BBQ area should be close enough for easy access to your kitchen but not so close that the smoky smell is getting into your home.
- Keep your BBQ a safe distance away from any trees, bushes, garden structures or furniture that could catch fire.
- While it might be tempting to put your BBQ in the sunniest spot in the garden, it's best to have an area with some shade for your table and chairs. You might also need some shelter from the rain!
- Ensure your BBQ area is not too close to neighbouring fences or anywhere that could disrupt your neighbours.
A decking tends to get the heaviest use through spring and summer. To make sure its looking its best for the warmer weather, start by giving it a thorough clean. Remove debris and dirt, give it a good brush and inspect for any damage.
A quick refresh may be all your deck requires, but if you want to take it a step further, you can deep clean it with a decking cleaner, and even give it a fresh coat of paint so it looks fresh for the summer months.
