Beatsons Fence Slats are pressure treated softwood fence boards with a traditional sawn finish, built for long-lasting outdoor use. Available in two widths, 100mm and 150mm, both at 1.8m length and 19mm thickness, they suit post and rail fence construction for gardens or agricultural boundaries, and can also double as gravel boards. The pressure treatment protects against fungal decay and insect attack, reducing maintenance and extending life. For best results, re-paint or re-stain every 2 to 5 years depending on the product used. Sourced from responsibly managed softwood, these slats offer a cost-effective, durable solution for fencing projects.

Beatsons Fence Slats are manufactured from responsibly sourced softwood and pressure treated to protect against fungal decay and insect attack, giving reliable performance in exposed, outdoor conditions. Each fence slat has a traditional sawn finish, so expect a slightly rough, textured surface rather than a smooth, planed one.

These slats are most commonly used for post and rail fence construction in gardens or agricultural settings. They're also a practical choice as a gravel board, sitting at the base of a fence line to keep timber panels clear of ground moisture and soil contact.

Two sizes are available, so you can match the slat width to the scale of your fence or the coverage needed:

  • 1.8m x 100mm x 19mm (6ft x 4" x ¾")
  • 1.8m x 150mm x 19mm (6ft x 6" x ¾")

To maximise lifespan, we recommend re-painting or re-staining every 2 to 5 years, the exact interval depends on the treatment product used and the level of weather exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are fence slats used for?
Fence slats are primarily used to build post and rail fencing, common in gardens, paddocks and agricultural boundaries. They're fixed horizontally between posts. The same slats are also widely used as gravel boards, a lower board that closes the gap at the bottom and keeps fence panels off wet ground.

Do pressure treated fence slats need to be painted or stained?
Not immediately, pressure treatment already protects against fungal decay and insect attack for external use. However, applying a paint, stain or preservative every 2 to 5 years is recommended to maintain appearance and extend lifespan.

What's the difference between the 100mm and 150mm slats?
Both are the same length (1.8m) and thickness (19mm), the difference is coverage width. The 150mm slat covers more area per board, so fewer boards are needed to close the same gap, useful for reducing the number of joints or speeding up a build. The 100mm option suits tighter batten spacing or a more traditional look.
